3D printing supports: when they are needed and how to remove them easily

Short answer. Supports are required beneath areas a printer cannot build in mid-air. First reorient the model and split it where useful; then place only enough support on less visible surfaces and inspect every layer.
Supports solve a manufacturing problem but create another: they consume material, leave marks and add post-processing. Good preparation does not mean adding more. It balances print stability with surface quality.
Why overhangs become a problem
An FDM printer deposits each molten line on the layer below. Without sufficient material beneath it, the plastic sags. Resin printing forms layers differently, but isolated islands still need a path to the build platform through supports.
Overhang angle, bridge length, material, cooling, layer height and speed all interact. A universal overhang threshold is only a starting point, not a rule.
Change orientation first
Rotate the model so the face, logo and smooth visible surfaces have less contact with supports. A miniature often benefits from leaning backwards or sideways; an FDM figurine may work best where the arms and chin need only short support structures.
Orientation also affects strength. Printed layers create directional behaviour, so a thin sword, finger or hinge cannot be judged from support count alone.
Choose the support type
Conventional linear supports hold broad flat areas well. Tree supports suit organic figures and reach around complex silhouettes. Resin printing uses light, medium and heavy supports with different contact diameters.
A strong support should not touch the face simply because the automatic algorithm placed it there. Use support blockers and manual points where surface quality matters.
Tune the contact
For FDM, adjust Z distance, interface density and XY clearance. A small gap improves the underside but makes removal harder; a larger gap separates more easily but allows more sagging.
For resin, tip diameter, neck length, penetration depth and base stability matter. Values depend on the resin, model scale and printer profile.
Check before printing
Review the layers and locate the first layer of every separate feature. If a new region appears in mid-air without support, it is an island. Also inspect thin cape tips, fingers, teeth, straps and the roots of accessories.

For a complex model, save a screenshot of manual supports and the profile. This helps reproduce a successful setup and document changes.
Example: a miniature with a sword and cape
Tilt the model so contacts move from the face to the back and inside of the cape. Print the sword separately because the long, thin feature can deform and restrict body orientation. Heavy supports secure the main load zones; light supports hold garment edges. Check every island after slicing.
Mistakes and limitations
Automatic supports may miss a small island or create an excessive structure. An interface that is too dense can fuse to an FDM model; weak resin supports can detach. Removing supports before full cooling, or without warming a material when appropriate, may damage the part. Follow the instructions for your specific process.
