Which file formats can you download a 3D model in?

3D model download formats for printing, viewing, CAD and cutting
Choose the format for the tool and the next production step.

Short answer. The available formats depend on the tool and the generated result. STL or 3MF suit printing, OBJ or GLB preserve visual assets, and STEP is available only through a CAD method that produces it. The export panel for that result is the current source of truth.

AIPRINTGEN includes several generation modes and task-specific tools, so there is no single universal extension. Choose by the data you need to preserve and by the application that will use the file next.

For 3D printing

STL is the broadest compatibility choice: it describes the model surface and opens in nearly every slicer. 3MF can retain units, parts, colours and print-project data, but its availability still depends on the specific tool and result.

After downloading, set the intended scale, check manifoldness and inspect the sliced layers. A file extension does not certify print readiness.

For textures and viewing

OBJ can rely on separate material and image files. GLB normally packs geometry, materials and textures into one file, which makes it convenient for web viewing and transfer to Blender.

Textures do not change a single-colour print surface. Any feature that must be tactile has to exist as geometry at a printable size.

For CAD

STEP is intended for engineering solids and accurate exchange between CAD systems. In the current experimental CAD tool, STEP is produced by Method 2; confirm that it appears for your completed result before planning the next stage. A polygonal art model does not become parametric by changing its extension.

For bas-reliefs and custom inserts

Workflow for choosing a 3D model download format
Define the task first, then select an export the tool actually provides.

A bas-relief for CNC or printing is commonly exported as STL. The custom insert generator currently provides STL or 3MF for 3D printing and DXF or SVG for flat cutting. Choose the output accepted by your slicer, CAM package or fabricator.

How to avoid losing data

Keep the textured source and a separate print export. Do not send an OBJ without its linked files. State the physical size when sharing STL. For important work, record the date, tool, method and generation settings.

Selection example

Download a figurine as GLB for colour review and as STL for resin slicing. Save a bracket made with CAD Method 2 as STEP for dimensional inspection and direct CAD editing where supported, and export an STL for a prototype when that output is present. Print an insert from STL or 3MF, then send its flat contour to a cutter as DXF or SVG.

Mistakes and limitations

Technical comparison of 3D model formats for export
Validate geometry, scale and file data after downloading.

Export names and availability can change by tool and result. Renaming an extension is not conversion. Mesh-to-STEP conversion does not restore parametric history. Before handing work to a supplier, confirm units, axes and supported format version.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I download for Cura?
Usually STL or 3MF. When available, 3MF preserves units and project information more reliably.
How do I open a GLB file?
Use Blender, a compatible web viewer or another 3D editor that supports glTF.
Can a slicer print an OBJ?
Many slicers can import OBJ, but STL or 3MF is usually clearer for a straightforward single-colour print.
Where can I see the formats available to me?
Open the download or export panel for that completed model or tool result.

Summary

Choose the format for the next operation: slicing, visualisation, CAD editing or cutting. If unsure, retain the source model and make a separate STL or 3MF export for the slicer when offered.
